斯科特被英国人称为20世纪初探险时代的伟大英雄。1910年6月1日，他带领探险队离开英国，向南极点发起冲刺。当时，挪威人罗阿尔德·阿蒙森也率领着另外一支探险队向南极点进发。两支队伍展开了激烈角逐，都想争取“国家荣誉”。结果阿蒙森队于1911年12月14日捷足先登，而斯科特队则于1912年1月18日才抵达，比阿蒙森队晚了一个多月。不幸的是，在返程途中，南极寒冷天气提前到来，斯科特队供给不足，饥寒交迫。他们在严寒中苦苦拼搏了两个多月，终因体力不支而长眠于皑皑冰雪中。
早在最后一次南极远征之前，斯科特就已经是英国的民族英雄。他在1902－1904年间首次进行南极探险，相关游记《发现之旅》曾是英国最畅销的书。而他最后一次南极探险的悲壮故事由奥地利作家茨威格写成传记《伟大的悲剧》，使其影响了更多的人。
