简介
戈登·克雷出生于一个表演世家，他的母亲是英国著名女演员艾伦·泰丽，著有表演论著《想象·勤奋·敏慧》。这使得他从小接触戏剧就有得天独厚的条件。
生平成就
克雷的童年时代（1889-1897）都是在Lyceum剧院度过。由于他是他母亲和波西米亚建筑师戈德温的私生子，他还是感受到了维多利亚时代的道德压力的。1893年，他娶了梅·吉布森。有四个孩子。同时他和两个情人埃琳娜和伊莎多拉也各生了几个孩子。
那个时代木偶剧是巴黎的时尚，而他以他的超级傀儡理论而闻名。1912年他在他的《面具》杂志中写道：“我无限感谢它们（木偶）取代了活的演员……对我来说演员破坏了喜剧。”他声称：导演是“真正的舞台演员”，并把演员看做牵线木偶。这点遭受很大的争议。“演员必须消亡，而应该由无生命的形象取代他的位置------超级傀儡，我们如此称呼它直到它为自己赢得更好的名字。”
他的第一部主要作品是《论戏剧艺术》
在舞台设计上，他采用象征主义的观念。1910年，应俄国的斯坦尼斯拉夫斯基之邀，来到莫斯科，合作上演了《哈姆雷特》。
通过象征主义的剧场，人们将“回到他们远古时代在庆典仪式中的欢乐------再一次创造将被庆祝------敬意归还人的存在和生活本身------而神圣和快乐被创造出来调和死亡，而使死亡不至于那么难以忍受。”
