A cargo plane of the Tai Wah Company lands in Vietnam for repairs. The wireless operator, Cheung Chi-ting, and the pilot, Chan Lon-san, take the opportunity to tour around. They visit a bar and there meet a peanut seller, the young girl Lai-lai. When Lai-lai is molested by local bully Ko Ba, Chi-ting intervenes. Lai-lai is an overseas Chinese whose parents have died. She lives with her grandfather who wishes to set up a marriage for her with a rich businessman, Ng Ching-wah. Lai-lai opposes the marriage because Ching-wah has a heart condition and cannot fulfill Lai-lai"s wish to return to China. Lai-lai meets Chi-ting again in the home of social butterfly Madam Eight. Again, Lai-lai is harrassed by local bully Ko Ba who demands her to repay loan. Chi-ting again saves the day by paying off her debt. Not long after, Chi-ting and Lai-lai fall in love and live together. A few months later, Chi-ting learns that he must return to China after the plane is repaired but Lai-lai is thinking he will never come back again. She tells Chi-ting that she has cast a spell on him and demands his return in a year. Unbelieved, Chi-ting sets off and marries another woman according to his father"s wishes. A year passes , Chi-ting feels unwell and goes to Vietnam in search of Lai-lai. He arrives at the point when Lai-lai is on the verge of marrying Ching-wah, having already given birth to Chi-ting"s son. Lai-lai tells Chi-ting that she has not cast a spell on him and that she is still willing to go away with him. But Chi-ting is already married, leaving behind a crestfallen Lai-lai who eventually commits suicide.
